Story-wise this game begins the NESTS plot, that sees a group of evildoers looking to clone the worlds greatest fighters. There are also good touches like shadows on a background wall or a heat shimmer, and all of these pretty (but gritty) visuals are backed by a moody soundtrack. Stages change as the rounds progress with different times of day and weather effects. Visually there’s some fun character animations as well as plenty of detail in the surroundings. It’s an interesting way to play, although it should be noted that KOF 2000 (also now available on the eShop) would refine the system. Getting into the needed position can put you in danger, so whilst your Striker can be useful during fights, you may end up using them as a distraction rather than a means to get some more hits in. You do need to time it right and know the range of their attack, as it is all to easy for them to hop onto the screen, flap about at thin air and hop off again. Unplayable during the fights, you can however call them into action a few times to attack the opposition with a move. The big change is that you now pick four characters for your team, with the character in the number 4 slot being your team’s “Striker”. For fans of the long-running series, buying King of Fighters ’99 on the Nintendo Switch should be a no-brainer. And if you want to make the visuals a little more authentic, there’s an option to add scan lines.

Yeah, they’re pixelated, but they’re also full of detail and charm. To be honest, I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t when fullscreen, the visuals just seem to stand out more. Some may not be too bothered by them, but if you are, you can pretty much eradicate them at the expense of stretching the image a little. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Switch NSPĪs I mentioned earlier, by default King of Fighters ’99 runs at its original aspect ratio, leaving black bars at either side of the screen. Even if you’ve never played the game before you’ll be pulling off special moves and combos in no time. Mechanically, 2D fighting games haven’t really progressed that much since the late nineties, which means that King of Fighters ’99 doesn’t feel old. Combat is fast and fluid, the combatants are balanced and varied, and there’s a nice range of stages available too. One thing that really didn’t need any changing at all from the original release is the gameplay King of Fighters ’99 is as enjoyable to play now as it was nearly 20 years ago. Sure it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a modern fighting game like a training mode or online multiplayer, but for a retro title there’s enough to keep you going back. King of Fighters ’99 may be a port of a game from 1999, but work has been done so that it doesn’t particularly feel like it in terms of features and settings. Want to fight one-on-one rather than the standard three-on-three? Do it. Don’t want to play the game at the original aspect ratio leaving big black bars at the sides of the screen? You can resize the image. High Score and Caravan – and a wealth of options so that you can tailor the experience to your preferences.
